The registration reminder comes with a stern warning from the Commission.
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) published an announcement in their website and social media channels about the reminder for businesses that process personal data to register their appointed Data Protection Officers (DPO).
According to the NPC Circular 2022-04, organizations with at least 250 employees, or processing information of at least 1000 individuals, or those processing risky data must register their Data Processing Systems and Operations, as well as the appointed DPO. Upon successful registration, the organization may then generate the following documents as proof of their registration with the NPC. The following documents are the Certificate of Registration, and Seal of Registration.
Just last month, the NPC conducted compliance checks through privacy sweeps of businesses and shops at Ayala Malls Manila Bay. During this Privacy Sweep, the Commission found 65 mall tenants that process personal data, to be unregistered.
The Commission's Data Security and Compliance Office (DASCO) conducts these compliance checks nationwide to ensure that businesses meet the mandatory registration requirements. In addition, unregistered organizations and companies may face Administrative Fines under the NPC Circular 2022-01.
Registration with the NPC is now accomplished through its Registration System.
