Last May 30, 2024, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) hosted this year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City. The event was attended by Data Privacy advocates, Compliance Officers, and Data Protection Officers from both the public and private sectors. Notable guests included Senator Grace Poe, who emphasized the importance of data privacy and discussed the legislation she has championed in the Senate, particularly the SIM Registration Bill.
Commissioner Atty. John Henry Naga spoke about the NPC’s achievements and plans regarding data privacy. This year’s theme, “Data Privacy for All: Embracing Inclusivity and Diversity,” highlighted the importance of inclusive and diverse approaches to data privacy. Likewise, the Data Privacy Sectoral Council along with the Commissioner, signed during the event its Code of Conduct.
Presenters during the event discussed their respective corporate strategies for incorporating inclusivity in their Data Privacy Compliance initiatives. GCash addressed the need to bridge the gap in representing data privacy for its account holders, aiming to ensure that everyone comprehends data privacy rules. Meta highlighted their efforts to encourage younger audiences to use tools that protect their information from broader audiences, thus shielding them from potential social media threats.
Other organizations focused on women, senior citizens, and children emphasized the importance of engaging these groups in conversations about data privacy. They noted that involving them in policy discussions would make education on data privacy more impactful.
The NPC also presented its "Kabataang Digital" campaign that educates young people about data privacy and the use of social media platforms. Starting these educational efforts early is seen as crucial for fostering a strong understanding of data privacy in children, honing them as privacy champions of their own.
The event also addressed the potential harms of AI, particularly concerning vulnerable groups, and the growing concerns about bias and discrimination in AI systems, such as facial recognition and information utilization technologies.
Overall, Privacy Awareness Week 2024 focused on building a holistic and Data Subject-centered approach to Data Privacy policymaking to better protect personal data processed by organizations.
Cosaint Consulting Inc. is one with the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) and the Philippine National Privacy Commission (NPC) in continuously promoting the Privacy Awareness Week, with its focus on building a holistic and Data Subject-centered approach to Data Privacy policymaking to better protect personal data processed by organizations. Some quick recommendations for this are the following:
- Ensuring that published Consent Forms and Privacy Notices are written in a language that is understood by the target audience of the organization.
- The purpose for collecting and processing personal data from customers is clearly stated.
- Informing Data Subjects of the Data Protection Officer contact information with whom they can communicate their inquiries or requests regarding the processing of their personal data.
Overcoming the challenge of Empowering Data Subjects with the essential information needed to make informed decisions about sharing their personal data.
